Asham heads home

Already young up front, the Brandon Wheat Kings have gotten even younger with the news that second-year centre Daniel Asham has left the team.

Asham, 18, played in the first game of the Western Hockey League club’s West Coast road trip Tuesday against the Medicine Hat Tigers, but was not in the lineup the following night against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He returned home to Headingley on Thursday.

In a news release, the Wheat Kings stated, "Asham told Brandon general manager Kelly McCrimmon that he was no longer enjoying the game and has decided to move on." Asham declined to comment when contacted by the Sun.

Asham, chosen by the Wheat Kings in the eighth round of the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, notched four goals and nine assists in 63 games last season.

In eight games this season, Asham had a goal and an assist.

His departure leaves the Wheat Kings with 23 players on their roster, including 13 forwards. However, with third-year forward Jason Swyripa out indefinitely due to a wrist injury and Czech rookie Richard Nejezchleb yet to play on the trip due to an upper-body injury, the Wheat Kings have just 11 healthy players up front, including only four veterans.

The Wheat Kings continue their road trip tonight against the Kelowna Rockets.
