It looks like Jesse Gabrielle’s apprenticeship with the Brandon Wheat Kings will be restricted to off the ice for the moment.
After joining the Western Hockey League club and practising on Tuesday, the 15-year-old prospect was held out of Wednesday’s session as the Wheat Kings waited for the Minnesota high school standout’s transfer to be finalized.
"We’re awaiting approval from USA Hockey," said Wheat Kings general manager Kelly McCrimmon, who added that he believed the situation would be temporary. "Hockey Canada and USA Hockey have a relationship that would be different than say waiting for a release for Richard Nejezchleb (from the Czech Republic)."
After producing 15 goals and 47 points in 28 games with Eagan High School as a freshman, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound forward is slated to remain with the Wheat Kings for the rest of the WHL season.
Owners of a 22-38-4-3 record, the Wheat Kings have five games left, starting with Friday’s home date with the Eastern Conference leading Edmonton Oil Kings (7:30 p.m., Westman Place).
ROYAL RUMBLE: The WHL has suspended three members of the Victoria Royals, including head coach Dave Lowry, for a length of time to be determined for the team’s actions in the third period of Wednesday’s 6-0 loss to the Kamloops Blazers. Royals forward Tim Traber, who took a fighting major and a game misconduct, was also suspended, while defenceman Keegan Kanzig will sit after what the WHL ruled to be a "one-man fight."
