Pulock picked for WHL's Super series squad

The Brandon Wheat Kings’ West Coast road trip won’t be Ryan Pulock’s last visit to Lotusland this season.

The 18-year-old Wheat Kings captain has been named to the Western Hockey League’s team for the Subway Super Series against Russia. Pulock will play in the Nov. 14 game in Vancouver, but not the following night in Victoria.

The Grandview native also played in the Super Series last year, and figured another invitation would come this year. Although it wasn’t a surprise, he said it’s still a thrill to play internationally.

“I’ve got the opportunity a few times so far in my career and it’s a great feeling to be able to represent, whether it be Canada or the WHL,” he said in a telephone interview from Kamloops, B.C., where the Wheat Kings face the Blazers tonight (8:30, CKLQ). “I’m looking forward to it.”

After picking up two assists in the Wheat Kings’ 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Giants on Wednesday night, Pulock has seven goals and 18 points this season.

There will be more on the line than league and national pride for Pulock in the game. He’s a top-10 prospect for next year’s National Hockey League draft and a candidate for this year’s Canadian world junior team, so there will be plenty of eyes on him in this high-profile event.

“I think it’s key,” he said. “This is the place where the team can look at guys and hopefully I can go there and make an impression on the world junior staff.”
