Mark Stone will have to clear out a little bit more space on his trophy shelf.
The 19-year-old Brandon Wheat Kings captain won the Brad Hornung Trophy as the Western Hockey League’s most sportsmanlike player on Wednesday.
Spokane Chiefs defenceman Reid Gow of Killarney was also a winner at the WHL’s awards luncheon in Calgary, earning the Doc Seaman Trophy as the scholastic player of the year.
Stone, an Eastern Conference first-team all-star the last two seasons, finished second in WHL scoring with 123 points, including 41 goals, in 66 games while spending only 22 minutes in the penalty box.
He’s the first Wheat King to receive the award since Cory Cyrenne in 1998 and joins a list of winners that includes current Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie.
"I’ve had a great relationship with Darren over the last four years in Brandon," said Stone, 19, who finished the season with the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators and is expected to play in their system next season. "I really respect his knowledge of the game and to be on a trophy with him I think is real special for the both of us."
While Stone spends very little time in the penalty box, totalling only 102 minutes in his four-year WHL career, Wheat Kings general manager Kelly McCrimmon said that’s not a reflection of the Winnipegger’s intensity.
"He plays hard, he’s very competitive, he pays a tremendous price to be as good a player as he is and yet does it without putting his team short-handed hardly at all," McCrimmon said.
Gow, a 17-year-old in his second WHL season, made his mark in the classroom by posting a 95 per cent average in his core classes, including a perfect 100 per cent in sports marketing. He is also enrolled in an online course through Athabasca University.
While he jokes that his teammates will brand him a "nerd" now, Gow said the award is something he’s very proud of.
"My family really takes pride in academics and you need to be a smart person to go anywhere in life," said Gow, who had two goals and 22 points in 54 games this season. "I work hard in school and hopefully it shows."
League scoring champion Brendan Shinnimin of the Tri-City Americans won the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as player of the year after the 20-year-old Winnipegger racked up 58 goals and 134 points in 69 games.
