It didn’t take long for the newest Brandon Wheat Kings to make in impact.
Defenceman Nick Walters, acquired before Thursday’s Western Hockey League trade deadline, dished out three assists as Brandon posted a 6-2 road victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Marek Kalus, picked up in another deadline deal, added an assist in his Wheat Kings debut.
“We knew they were good players coming in,” Wheat Kings head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk said. “… They fit in really nice tonight and it was good to see them get rewarded in their first game as Brandon Wheat Kings.”
Nick Buonassisi had a goal and an assist, while Taylor Cooper, Rene Hunter, Tim McGauley, Chad Robinson and Jens Meilleur also scored as the Wheat Kings (15-25-2-2) snapped a five-game losing streak.
The Warriors (14-23-3-4) lost their sixth in a row, despite goals by Bryson Gore and Justin Kirsch.
Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Wheat Kings answered back early in the second as Cooper collected a lead pass from Kalus and scored on a breakaway.
Hunter gave Brandon the lead, scoring his first of the season on a power play midway through the middle frame and the Wheat Kings were off to the races.
Gylywoychuk said he was happy with the way the team responded to Thursday’s changes.
“It was a very good team effort, top to bottom,” he said. “I think that our team took the first step here today with the changes that we made and the biggest thing that we’ve seen today, we played a simple team game and the guys got rewarded.”
