Wheat Kings' Yaworski will be suspended

Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Tyler Yaworski will receive a multiple-game suspension for a checking-to-the-head penalty on the weekend.

Western Hockey League vice-president Richard Doerksen confirmed Monday night that he informed the 20-year-old blue-liner that he will be suspended for more than one game, with Doerksen expecting to finalize the length of the suspension either today or tomorrow.

Yaworski was ejected during Saturday night’s 5-2 Wheat Kings victory over the Regina Pats at Westman Place after his second-period open-ice hit that knocked Regina’s Luke Fenske out of the game.

“There was body contact, but there certainly was contact to the head,” Doerksen said.

“It’s the type of hit that we don’t want to see in the game.”

Yaworski received a checking to the head major — his second of the season — and a game misconduct for Saturday’s hit. Earlier this season, Yaworski served a three-game suspension for a checking to the head major he received in WHL action on Oct. 24 in Vancouver versus the Giants.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound native of Sherwood Park, Alta., leads the Wheat Kings in penalty minutes with 129 and has also scored three goals and added six assists with a team-leading +6 plus/minus rating in 51 games.

With Yaworski out, 16-year-old rookie Kord Pankewicz is expected to draw back into the lineup when the Wheat Kings (19-31-2-2) play host to the Lethbridge Hurricanes (24-23-1-7) on Wednesday at Westman Place at 7 p.m.
