Give Joel Edmundson credit for knowing how to win over Kamloops Blazers fans in a hurry.
Acquired by Kamloops from the Moose Jaw Warriors last Thursday, the 6-foot-4, 208-pound defenceman from Brandon made his debut with his new Western Hockey League team the following night, scoring a goal and going +2 in a 3-0 win over the Prince George Cougars.
Edmundson, 19, also got his hands dirty in his debut, fighting Cougars defenceman Daniel Gibb in the second period.
“After I dropped the mitts it relaxed me and I just played my game,” Edmundson told Gregg Drinnan of the Kamloops Daily News.
Edmundson told Drinnan that he saw the writing on the wall in Moose Jaw, with the Warriors retooling after advancing to the Eastern Conference final last season.
“I was expecting something, but I wasn’t really expecting it until after Christmas,” he said. “It’s good to get it done with and I’m really happy (to be with the Blazers). It’s a great organization … great guys. I couldn’t be happier.”
Edmundson’s second game with the Blazers did not go quite as well. The Blazers beat the Vancouver Giants 4-1, but the Daily News reports Edmundson didn’t feel well and left the game in the second period.
RED-HOT HURRICANE: Jaimen Yakubowski has never had a run like this in his WHL career. The second-year Lethbridge Hurricanes forward was named the Canadian Hockey League player of the week on Tuesday, one day after earning his second straight WHL weekly award.
Yakubowski had six goals and three assists in three games last week, including five goals in the Hurricanes’ wild 8-7 shootout loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday.
In the last two weeks he has 11 goals and 17 points in seven games, topping his production from his first 28 games of the season (eight goals, 15 points).
He joins JC Lipon as the Kamloops Blazers as the only players to win back-to-back WHL player of the week awards this season.
AROUND THE WHL: Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks, likely to be chosen in the top three picks of the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft, is doing nothing but helping his stock right now. Jones is on a nine-game point-scoring streak, the longest by a defenceman in the WHL this season, posting two goals and 12 assists in that span … D Kade Pilton, a former second-round WHL Bantam Draft choice of the Chilliwack Bruins, quit the Regina Pats on Sunday. The 6-foot-5 Pilton has seven goals, 17 points and 77 penalty minutes in 72 career games … Former Wheat Kings RW Dakota Conroy celebrated his 100th WHL game on Sunday with the Prince Albert Raiders, posting a goal and two assists in a 7-0 road win over Medicine Hat.
