First he and his teammates became part of the NHL video game series, now Corbin Boes is going to be immortalized in cereal.

The Brandon Wheat Kings veteran is one of 24 Canadian Hockey League goalies — eight from the WHL — who will be recognized with hockey cards in boxes of Post cereals, with half of them appearing on the box fronts themselves. Boes said he signed a waiver allowing his likeness to appear in June and hasn’t heard much about the promotion since then, although he adds he’s flattered by the honour.

"I eat cereal every morning for breakfast, so it makes it pretty special, I guess," he chuckled, admitting he was one of those youngsters who would dig straight to the bottom of the box to find the prize inside.

"If whatever was in it was appealing, I definitely was more interested in that than the cereal."

And is a Corbin Boes player card an appealing prize?

"It’d be nice to collect one," he said. "But other than that, you can’t let stuff like that get to your head."

As appropriate as it might sound, Boes won’t be on a Wheaties box, as that isn’t a Post brand.

STATE OF THE UNION: The Canadian Hockey League Players Association has ramped up its campaign recently — first with last week’s threats of legal action against Ontario Hockey League clubs, followed by a Radio-Canada report on Monday that players on the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Sherbrooke Phoenix had voted 80 per cent in favour of joining the aspiring union.

Clearly, the CHLPA is not to be taken lightly, but one has to wonder what it hoped to accomplish with its threats to sue teams for failing to meet minimum-wage standards, when the organization has maintained from the beginning that its mandate was to improve educational benefits, not paycheques, for players. Even stranger, CHLPA spokesperson Derek Clarke told Guy Flaming of The Pipeline Show of TEAM 1260 radio in Edmonton, that the money is still not the issue and the legal action is merely a way to leverage the CHL into discussing education.

"That could be a bargaining position or a tool that’s used to bargain," Clarke told Flaming.

Certainly the CHLPA isn’t the first to use such a negotiating ploy, but to then admit as much publicly before the gambit had a chance to play out? That’s sort of like wheeling the Trojan Horse up to the gates of Troy, then tacking on a sign that says, ‘Seats up to 40 soldiers in comfort!’

AROUND THE WHL: Medicine Hat C Curtis Valk was named the CHL player of the week Tuesday, one day after earning the WHL honour. Valk had seven goals and three assists in four games last week, scoring five goals and adding a helper in Friday’s 10-1 win over Calgary.
