BREAKING NEWS — Police launch public appeal over sex assaults
Brandon Sun
Brandon police have launched a public appeal for information after arresting a former Brandon resident in connection with sexual assaults allegedly committed against youth during the 1980s.
Following a two-year investigation by Brandon police, a man was arrested in Sarnia, Ont. on Monday and brought back to Brandon.
The man is accused of assaulting three young victims, aged 11 years to 15 years, between 1984 and 1988. The man was in a position of authority with at least two local youth groups at the time of the alleged assaults, and police say the offences were committed during group outings.
Iain Kenneth George Smy, 47, of Sarnia faces nine counts of sexual assault and is currently in custody pending a court appearance on Monday.
Meanwhile, police are asking for information about any youth organizations Smy may have been connected with while living in the Brandon area. Anyone with information is asked to call the Brandon Police Service at 729-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 727-8477.
Citing the ongoing investigation, police aren't releasing further details at this time.
