I’m still holding out hope for a few hot and sunny weeks of summer.
If you’re needing a bit of outdoor inspiration, and haven’t been able to spy anything that piques your interest thus far, you might drool a bit over the 2014 Crate & Barrel summer presentation of outdoor furniture and decor — I know I did.
Poufs and pillows
An excellent substitute for a footstool or cube ottoman, the Moroccan-inspired floor ‘pouf’ is perfect for small outdoor spaces, or deck surfaces in need of a softening touch. Done up in resilient Sunbrella fabrics, floor poufs are whimsical additions to casual outdoor living spaces, and a great way to add a pop of colour to more neutral patio furniture. Perch, rest, or sling your feet atop one or two of these colourful accents.
Graphic area rugs
Another perfect eye-catching decorating tool, a highly patterned and brightly coloured outdoor area rug is an easy and low maintenance addition to your patio and veranda floor surfaces. Decking material typically tends to look bland and neutral — which is a terrific canvas to work from — so heat things up by throwing down an outdoor area rug.
If you don’t have the time or green thumb of a more seasoned gardener to get your curb appeal blooming in full glory, this next idea may just be the perfect solution. Stock up on a few dramatic and stately planters. Oversized tall cylinders and low shallow gourds that look like heavy stone and concrete are on the top of Crate & Barrel’s summer must-have list. Nestle some trailing potato vine, bear grasses, or collection of lime green succulents in one of these beauties — the look is clean, crisp, and ever so contemporary.
Regarding your outdoor dining spaces, consider removing two of your dining chairs and instead opt for a cozy and more casual dining bench — complete with a cozy and colourful cushion. A little less formal and suitably more accessible, a bench can create more of a dining nook feeling, and is reminiscent of picnics and lovely park-side gatherings.
Mix and match
The scheme this year at C&B is definitely a ‘mix and match’ theme — patterns and textures are pulled together by co-ordinating colours, allowing you to merge different shapes and styles in the same area. Keep that in mind the next time you’re out and about: a bright red market umbrella, paired with a few graphic red and blue striped cushions, a red and cream latticework area rug, and several black planters is the perfect combination for creating a Crate & Barrel-inspired outdoor retreat.
