It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and what better place to bring in a new year than your own home with friends and family. On a night known for hype, excitement and pizzazz, it’s also an expectation that can make any hostess feel a little intimidated. Here are a few ideas to help you throw the fabulous party you envision, and set the tone for the upcoming year.
Deciding on Décor
Since we’re still in the throes of the holiday season, a lot of your decorating is already done. Don’t toss out scraps of leftover holiday paper, use them to make streamers for a backdrop or use a leftover roll for a table runner.
Additional coordinating colours can be layered in to your existing scheme, for example if your Christmas décor was red and silver, consider adding turquoise; if you had gold and cream, include wine or berry accents. Toss cushions are an easy way to pull out a highlight colour, and throws add an inviting layer of warmth and coziness.
Adding some sparkle to any colour scheme is key for New Year’s Eve; cover champagne bottles in glitter spray paint, sprinkle silver confetti over your table setting, or add some shimmering gold coasters — and lots of them!
If you’re looking to add a theme to your party, go graphic and use black-and-white clock faces as inspiration. Gather a few clocks (working or not) and create stylish arrangements throughout your home.
Choosing a Menu
Buffet style is great for a NYE party; guests can leisurely nibble and visit the whole night through.
A fun addition to add to your party is some type of ‘bar’. Putting together a champagne bar is very fitting, but adding mixers like fruit juices and purees puts a fun spin on it.
Another fun idea is providing a hot chocolate bar! Create a customizable cup of cocoa by offering marshmallows, candy canes, caramels, or pirouline wafers!
Another idea for something different is a confetti bar, guests can mix their own creation to celebrate the final countdown of the year — it is sure to be a hit!
Have fun styling a bar cart, dresser or buffet to house your chosen ‘bar’, leaning a large wreath under a console is a simple décor statement that looks trendy and chic.
Countdown & Enjoy
For a fun twist on the New Year’s Eve countdown, pass champagne in glasses marked with numbers representing those anticipated last 10 seconds. Simply pick up self-stick numbers found in any office or art-supply store. Another fun idea is to incorporate a ‘resolution board’ into your party. Each guest can write highlights from the year before, what they’re looking forward to in the coming year, or any goals and wishes they might have.
A great hostess takes special care that each of her guests is enjoying themselves, which includes you. Try not to get overwhelmed with keeping drinks topped, and bellies full. Enjoy the amazing evening you have put so much thought and effort into.
Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy New Year!
