This article is intended to be a little cheeky, a bit sassy even. Take it with a grain of salt, but perhaps you can spy one or two items below in need of freshening up in your own home. What am I getting at here? Updates and facelifts! It’s likely time for a change if your house still has any of the following:
BRASS
Gold is in. Old brass is not, I’m sorry to say. Railings, light fixtures, frames, faucets — if it’s pre-1999 and it’s yellow, it’s time to go. If you’re in love with gold like I am at the moment, look for rich tones and hammered or spun finishes, and infuse it in smaller doses with decor and accessories.
SHAG
If you’re still wondering whereabouts that earring or Cheerio ended up, it might just be time to rip out that old shag carpet and opt for something less mysterious. Yes, there is ‘new’ shag carpeting out there, but I’ve never truly been a fan: it sucks up and holds dirt and other goodies like a Hoover, making it an allergen-inducing culprit. Some of the most stylish carpets today are all about embossed and multi-loop/twist textures — a far cry from fuzz and furry.
BOSOMS
Yes you read that right. "Bosom lights." They’re everywhere. New homes, old homes — basic and blah looking flush mount light fixtures that resemble, well you get the picture. With all of the inspiring and truly unique options out there (at more than affordable prices), if you’ve got them, rip ’em out and ban the boob.
TWO-INCHERS
Baseboards and casings with a height of two inches or less are a sign of the times — times of the ’70s and ’80s. This small but subtle detail can make a world of difference if you’re looking for a quick fix to help modernize your home.
PRINTED VELOUR
It’s kind of ironic — the most hideous couches and chairs still floating around out there tend to still be the most nap-inducing epitomes of comfort you’ve ever had the pleasure of sinking into. You know exactly the ones I’m talking about. Black or navy backgrounds with electric blue, yellow, pink, and red geometrics, or golden acorns and autumn leaves. I commend the loyalty to your favorite recliner or love seat over the years, but it’s time to ship them up to the cabin or re-home to a good cause and purchase solid, transitional pieces covered in timeless neutral upholstery or classic leather. You can invest all you want in new paint, decor, blinds, or flooring. If your furniture still shows its age, you’re wasting your hard-earned money.
BORDERS
Although cutesy and clever at the time, wallpaper borders were given their walking papers years ago. There are the odd exceptions (like nurseries), but really, when there are so many fantastic wall coverings and sublime paint finishes to choose from, there’s just no excuse for leaving these guys up and painting around them.
PANELING
Unless you’re at the lake, wall paneling really has no business still gracing your walls and basement ceilings. Painted wainscoting and classic bead board finishes are tasteful and charming — perfect for those imperfect walls, or rooms needing some polish.
OLD PAINT COMBOS
Colour is such a personal choice and statement, so I tend to stay very open-minded when selecting my palettes. But there are definitely a few combinations that need to be retired: pink and blue, hunter green and cranberry, yellow and tan or brown, and basically anything with peach. Breathe new life, and not to mention currency, into your spaces by washing your walls in tones you adore and will last at least another five to 10 years.
