Design Style: Ode to London

Goodbye, Paris. Hello, London! While the French capital's been dear to decorators and designers alike for several years, we're seeing the look of London more and more in the newest home furnishings and interior accessories. And with the 2012 Olympics happening as we speak, what better a time to show a little British love?

Is it fleur-de-lis fatigue? Too many Eiffel Towers? Perhaps. For me, London blends charm and cheekiness, traditions and trends... it's vibrant and powerfully iconic, so naturally I'm drawn to the nostalgia of it when looking for classic or statement-making décor pieces.

To add a little British fun to your spaces, look to the instantly recognizable landmarks found in smaller accessories: There are candles shaped like Big Ben, pillows showing double-decker buses and classic phone booths, printed bedding with the London Bridge, and blankets, rugs and shower curtains with an oversize hounds-tooth pattern and riding-set vibe. Metallic inks etch crowns and royal jewels on pillows, table linens and even tea sets. I've always been a fan of the Union Jack flag — kitschy and bursting with bold colour, you can find them emblazoned on hand-loomed wool rugs, outdoor floor mats, pillows, coasters, foot stools, wall decals and even paperweights.

UK design doesn't shy away from bright colours and impactful patterns, and neither should you: reds, navies, sky blues, scarlets, inky blacks, Kelly greens, and citrus yellows will help to add bursts of British flavour throughout your home all year long!

» Crispin Butterfield owns Urban Theory Interior Design, and has been designing residential and commercial spaces in Brandon and abroad for the past nine years. She welcomes your inquiries at designchick.ca
