The Westman 5-Pin Open Zone Championships were held Feb. 8-9 at Thunderbird Bowl in Brandon, and it was an exciting show to watch, with battles for position coming right to the final 18th game.
On the ladies side, Nicole Sentner strung together four games of 294, 300, 350 and 305 within her 18-game block, and finished with a 248 average to help propel her to the Ladies Zone Championship.
There were 36 points separating second through fourth, as Gisele Sayer and Michelle Brown came away with second and third spots to represent Westman in the singles and team competiton. Laura Tycoles, Glenys Stanley and Dana Clark round out the ladies team.
In men’s competition, Garry Hamm averaged 254 for his 18-game set to win the Men’s Zone Championship. he battle for the remaining positions was very close, with 105 points separating third through eighth place.
In the end, Ethan Buckman and Terry Wikstrom will also represent Westman in singles and team competition. Joining these gentleman on the men’s team will be Brad Stevenson, Trevor Rae, and Jerry Sayer.
The Westman mixed team heading to provincials consists of the three men and three women who finished seventh, eighth and ninth in the zone event.
On the men’s side, Steve Derksen, Wes Rushton and Jason Scaletta qualified, along with Coralee Baker, Brenda Bradshaw, and Heather Arthurson on the ladies side.
Coaches for the Westman contingent this year will be Perry Bender for the men’s team, Brad Ball for the ladies and Brad Rusnak for the mixed team.
The provincial championships take place in Brandon at Thunderbird Bowl on Easter Weekend, April 17 to 19. The winners will advance to the national championships in Calgary at the end of May.
Meanwhile, the Brandon Bowlers of the Week were Jason Scaletta (+219) from Monday Night Mixed, and Coralee Baker (+121) from Monday Provincial Mixed.
