Ex-police officer, prison officer admit selling information to The Sun tabloid

LONDON - A former police officer and a prison officer have admitted selling information to Rupert Murdoch's The Sun newspaper.

Both pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office Friday.

Policeman Alan Tierney admitted selling information about arrests including the case involving Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

Prison office Richard Trunkfield admitted providing the tabloid with information about a prominent prisoner.

They were arrested as part of the Operation Elveden investigation into allegations that newspapers were paying police and other officials for information.

The inquiry is connected to the scandal of reporters listening to voice mail messages left for celebrities, crime victims, politicians and others.

The wrongdoing has led to numerous arrests, large payouts to victims and the closure of Murdoch's News of the World tabloid.
