Grammy-winning band Phoenix performs first concert in Manila

MANILA, Philippines - Phoenix frontman and singer Thomas Mars said he and fellow band members were enjoying their first visit to the Philippines and were looking forward to their concert.

The Grammy-winning French dance pop and glam rock quartet was performing Tuesday night at Manila's World Trade Center.

In a brief interview hours before the concert, Mars said the band had some time to see Manila and "we are enjoying it very much."

But he said they were looking forward to putting on the show the most.

Mars is married to film director Sofia Coppola, who he said was unable to join him in Manila.

He told the ABS-CBN TV network that Coppola had "the best memories" of the Philippines, where she studied for two years as a child while her father was filming "Apocalypse Now" in the country. She learned the national anthem and a little bit of the language.

He said they felt welcomed by Filipinos immediately after arriving at Manila's airport.

"We got off the plane and two staff people were singing one of the most obscure of our songs — it's called 'Victims of the Crime' — so that was a very nice welcome," he told ABS-CBN.

The band's album "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" won a Grammy Award in 2009.
