Tombstone of Mozart's son damaged in western Czech spa of Karlovy Vary

PRAGUE - An official says unknown vandals have badly damaged the tombstone of the son of famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the western Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary.

City Hall spokesman Jan Kopal says authorities discovered Monday that the cast iron part of the tombstone was separated from its stone base by force and partially broken.

The tombstone is located in a public park known as the Mozart Park, which served as a cemetery until 1864. Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart, who was a composer like his father, died in Karlovy Vary of cancer in 1844.

Kopal says one more tombstone in the park was also damaged. He says experts are assessing the damage while police investigate.
