The sixth Augustfest, featuring 20 musicians with significant ties to Westman, opens Wednesday, Aug. 12, with events honouring Brandon University professor emeritus Lawrence Jones.

A noon-hour luncheon will feature cellists Laura Jones, Ariel Carrabre, Nathaniel Froese and Michelle Bouchard performing “Nightlife,” a five-movement quartet commissioned from Mark Marinic.

That evening, pianist Sergei Saratovsky, a favourite of Augustfest audiences, will present the festival’s opening concert, dedicated to Jones.

Pianist Donna Laube, violinist Joan Dillon, violist Greg Hay and cellist Laura Jones will perform piano quartets by Dvorak and Heritte-Viardot, together with Stephen Hartke’s “King of the Sun” on Thursday evening’s concert.

Trumpet virtuoso Edward Bach and collaborating artist Michael Kim perform Hummel’s famous “Trumpet Concerto” on Friday evening as part of a wide-ranging survey of trumpet repertoire.

Saturday afternoon’s emerging artists recital features tubist Justin Hickmott and pianist Everett Hopfner in a program including several works by Brandon composers.

Saturday evening, Augustfest presents the Irving Berlin Songbook, featuring mezzo-soprano Laura McAlpine and baritone Doug MacNaughton in 26 Berlin favourites arranged for string quartet by Laura Jones.

Augustfest VI concludes on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16, with a performance by the internationally renowned Market Street Brass Quintet featuring Edward Bach, trumpet; Christian McIvor, trumpet; Jocelyn Park, flugelhorn; Aaron Wilson, trombone; and Tyler Lischynski, tuba.
