Kaitlyn Jones and Kristy Watling are playing on Sunday at the 2022 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club rinks officially clinched spots in the playoffs at the women’s provincial playdowns when they improved to 6-1 in the championship round Saturday morning in Carberry.
Jones, who plays with third Abby Ackland, second Robyn Njegovan and lead Sara Oliver, turned in a dominating 14-6 win over clubmate Darcy Robertson (4-3).
After stealing four points in the opening end and swiping away another point in the second, Jones officially broke the game wide open by earning a four-ender in the fourth frame.
She completed the contest by scoring five points in the seventh.
Watling’s 10-7 win over Kristy McDonald’s Granite rink (4-3) was a wild affair.
After falling behind 4-1 after four ends, Watling picked up four points in the fifth to move in front 5-4.
The team, which features Hailey Ryan at third, Emilie Rafnson at second and Sarah Pyke at lead, extended their cushion with a steal of three in the seventh.
Meanwhile, Alton’s Mackenzie Zacharias improved to 5-2 with a 9-6 victory over Tracy Fleury’s top-seeded rink from the East St. Paul, which dropped to 4-3.
Zacharias can clinch a spot in the playoffs at 4 p.m. today when she faces Jones in the final draw of the championship round.
If she loses, she will fall into a tiebreaker situation as McDonald, Fleury and Robertson are all still mathematically alive at the tournament.
The afternoon draw will see Fleury and McDonald squaring off, while Watling will take on Robertson.
If needed, a tiebreaker game will start at 8 p.m. tonight.
The semifinal is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow, with the final getting underway at 4 p.m.
The winner is slated to represent Manitoba at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Thunder Bay, Ont. from Jan. 28 to Feb. 6.
