SIXTY YEARS AGO: The Dominion Curling Association announced that the 1963 Macdonald Brier tankard will be up for grabs in the Wheat City Arena. The Wheat City group representing Brandon in Kitchener, Ont., for the bid for the Brier were: Norman S. Bergman, Mayor S.A. Magnacca, Alderman and Mrs. J.A. Creighton, L.D. Whitehead, Guy Laliberte, Don Francis, Jake Milford, Ralph Nye, Bill Barker, Fred Pilcher and Gerry MacKay.
FIFTY YEARS AGO: The second annual March of Dimes Eat-a-thon was held at Brandon University last night. Harrison High, the defending champs, went down to defeat against the new champs from Assiniboine Community College. A total of 756 ounces of burgers and fluid was consumed by the three four-man teams.
FORTY YEARS AGO: Sixteen-year-old Kent Forman of Rivers has won the CKX Radio and Television Rose Bowl for placing first in the strings competition at the Brandon Festival of the Arts. Patricia Nicolle, a 24-year-old Brandon University music student, won the Brandon Sun Rose Bowl for voice.
THIRTY YEARS AGO: Senior UN peacekeepers arrived in Yugoslavia to take command of UN peacekeeping forces yesterday — a day after seven people died in a renewal of violence in Croatia.
TWENTY YEARS AGO: Brandon University will receive more than $200,000 from the federal government to support indirect costs associated with research projects. Brandon University is one of four Manitoba universities that have been awarded more than $6.2 million in support funding, Industry Minister Allan Rock and Veterans Affairs Minister Rey Pagtakhan announced in Winnipeg.
