FIFTY YEARS AGO: Environment Minister Jack Davis said yesterday a total ban on commercial fishing of Atlantic salmon by Canadians will last for 10 years or until the population reaches a natural level. 
FORTY YEARS AGO: Brandon city officials are concerned about methane gas detected inside two Victoria Avenue East buildings situated on a former landfill site. The floor inside McGavin Foods Ltd. has dropped in the middle, and the sidewalks and parking lots have sunk up to 12 inches since the building was built in 1978. 
THIRTY YEARS AGO: A spacecraft has discovered the largest and oldest structures in the universe, wispy clouds that show how creation’s “big bang” led to formation of stars and galaxies, scientists in California said yesterday. 
TWENTY YEARS AGO: Two students from Brandon’s Assiniboine Community College are off to Vancouver next month to take part in the National Skills Competition. The computer systems technology students won gold at the recent Manitoba Skills Competition in Winnipeg, earning them the right to compete in the national contest. James Fisher won gold in the electronics category and Armand Lowe earned gold in PC network support. They’ll compete against students from across the country at the national competition at Vancouver’s B.C. Place.
