Election nomination period begins

The nomination period for mayoral, council and school trustee candidates in next month’s municipal elections in Manitoba officially opened Wednesday.

Registered candidates who want to be on the final ballot for the election in Brandon must submit their completed nomination forms that include their name, address, phone number, position they’re running for and a declaration that they’re eligible to run.

They must also provide the names, addresses and signatures of at least 25 voters — voters can be from anywhere within a municipality for mayoral candidates, and from a specific ward for council candidates.

Anyone wishing to withdraw their candidacy must submit a notice no later than 24 hours after the close of the nomination period on Sept. 20.

In Brandon, Jeff Fawcett, currently the only mayoral candidate, posted a picture of himself dropping off his nomination papers at Brandon City Hall on Wednesday.

Nominated council candidates as of Wednesday include: Richard Bruce (Ward 1), Dale Bates (Ward 2), Shaun Cameron (Ward 4), Bruce Luebke (Ward 6), Jason Splett (Ward 8), Michael McCormick (Ward 8), Glen Parker (Ward 9) and Tyson Tame (Ward 10).

Additionally, a candidate has been added to the list of registered council candidates for Ward 1, Heather Karrouze, who is a founder of Haristocracy Salon and executive director of The Counselling Centre.

Sound of the fur trade coming to BU

Historical researcher Daniel R. Laxer will be dropping by Brandon University Sept. 23 to talk about his new book, “Listening to the Fur Trade,” which is all about North America’s lost soundscapes.

In this book, Laxer uses the written record, oral history and material culture to reveal remnants of sound and music in an era before sound recording.

Through this method, Laxer has uncovered the songs and ceremonies of First Nations people, the paddling songs of the voyageurs and the fiddle music and step-dancing one would find at an old trading post.

The niche area of study is nothing new to Laxer. He holds a master of arts degree from York University and a PhD from the University of Toronto by looking at the histories of music and sound in the fur trade, specifically.

While he has published many academic articles on this subject, Laxer currently works as a historical researcher for the negotiations and reconciliation division of Ontario’s Ministry of Indigenous Affairs.

His upcoming BU speaking event, which is free to attend, will take place at the John E. Robbins Library at 7 p.m.

Council delayed, buildings closed Monday

The City of Brandon is delaying its regularly scheduled council meeting by one day and closing most municipal buildings on Monday in recognition of the day of mourning in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, whose funeral will be held that day.

The council meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brandon City Hall.

Brandon City Hall, the A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex, Civic Services Complex and the Eastview Landfill will be closed for the day.

Additionally, Brandon’s Youth Centre will be open from 3:45 to 9 p.m., and the Brandon Municipal Cemetery will be closed. Brandon Transit will operate under regular hours from 6 a.m. to midnight, and the Sportsplex will maintain regularly scheduled activities from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“On behalf of Brandon City Council, I encourage all of us to reflect on the remarkable legacy that Queen Elizabeth II has left,” Mayor Rick Chrest stated in a release.

Until Sept. 20, members of the public can sign one of two books of condolence for the Queen located in the foyer of Brandon City Hall.

Police watchdog investigating traffic collision

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba is looking into a motor vehicle collision between a Brandon police cruiser and civilian vehicle.

Members of Brandon Police Service officially notified the IIU of this crash on Aug. 29, revealing that the incident took place on Aug. 24 around 12:44 a.m. at the intersection of 26th Street and Park Avenue.

IIU’s civilian director has since determined it is in the public interest for the unit to investigate and is asking witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage to contact the IIU toll free by calling 1-844-667-6060.

Prisoners charged with aggravated assault

Three inmates from the Brandon Correctional Centre were scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday after they allegedly beat up another prisoner.

This incident occurred on Monday and involved three inmates attacking the victim who suffered injuries to his upper body, according to a Brandon Police Service media release.

The three suspects — who are 41, 31 and 23 years of age — were arrested on Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault.

Man arrested for stealing bike

Brandon police arrested a 29-year-old man from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on Tuesday for allegedly stealing a bicycle last month.

This theft was originally reported to police on Aug. 28, after the bike was taken from outside a business in the 1500 block of 18th Street.

Using surveillance footage from the scene, police were able to identify and arrest the suspect during a traffic stop near 10th Street and Victoria Avenue on Tuesday.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 28 on a charge of theft under $5,000.

Break-in suspect caught

Local police arrested a 41-year-old man early Wednesday morning for allegedly breaking into a garage earlier this month and stealing some items.

The break-in happened on Sept. 3 in the 400 block of 12 Street, although a media release from the Brandon Police Service didn’t identify what was taken.

Police were able to identify the suspect using surveillance footage from the scene and located him on Wednesday, at 1:47 a.m., in the 700 block of Rosser Avenue.

The 41-year-old was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
