James Ehnes, a 17-year-old violinist virtuoso from Brandon, was the youngest competitor in the 27th CBC Radio National Competition for Young Performers this weekend in Ottawa. Ehnes won in the strings category, receiving an $8,000 prize, bookings as guest soloist with eight symphony orchestras across the country, a recital tour of Atlantic Canada, two recitals for national broadcast, a recording session for a compact disc and more. Ehnes was also awarded $1,500 for the best strings performance of a Canadian work.
Paul Edwards, a Winnipeg lawyer who rode into the legislature five years ago on the popularity of Sharon Carstairs, has been picked to take over from Carstairs as leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party.

More than 40 residents and a dozen businesses were evacuated yesterday after power was shut to Brandon’s tallest high-rise. Power to the Scotia Towers was turned off after a burst water line was discovered in the basement at about 1 p.m., said Allan Blocka, general manager for Multiplex Management Ltd. Large hoses trailed out of the building, pumping out three feet of water from the basement. Returning residents were told they would have to find somewhere else to stay.

Canada Post is gauging how many service cuts Westman residents are willing to endure as the Crown corporation predicted to hemorrhage billions of dollars. As part of a nationwide consultation process, high-level managers of the beleaguered postal corporation from Ottawa and Winnipeg met with an invited group of 10 Brandon residents to get a handle on what the area’s residents want and what they’re willing to sacrifice.
The new president of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce wants to see the organization expand its focus on economic and business development. Craig Senchuk, vice-president of Agri-Trend Business Management, took the reins as the head of the business lobby group on Thursday during an official swearing-in ceremony at the Victoria Inn.
