Dauphin RCMP charge man with arson

A 54-year-old man from the Ethelbert area has been charged with setting a woman’s home on fire.

Dauphin RCMP say at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday, the woman heard noises outside her home on Railway Avenue in Ethelbert, located 61 kilometres north of Dauphin. When she looked outside, she saw a fire on the corner of her home.

The woman and her three children were able to get out, and fire crews extinguished the blaze, according to police. Minor damage was reported.

Based on a description of a man seen running away from the woman’s home, officers went to a property north of Ethelbert and arrested Marc Andre Dorais, who they say was in possession of three knives and a hatchet.

Dorais was charged with arson with disregard for human life, criminal harassment, mischief, possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose and three counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Police say he was held in custody until his court appearance in Brandon.

Theft of tip jar

Brandon police arrested a 22-year-old woman who allegedly stole a tip jar from a business on two separate occasions.

On May 14, a business in the 1200 block of 18th Street reported that a woman came into the store and took the tip jar from the counter.

According to police, the woman came back on Monday and repeated the offence.

Later that evening, officers arrested a woman at her residence and charged her with two counts of theft under $5,000.

She was released with a court date of Aug. 12.

Weapon and meth found

A 37-year-old man was arrested at about 2:30 p.m. Monday for possessing a weapon, methamphetamine and cocaine.

Police say while checking a man in the 800 block of Lorne Avenue, they noticed a knife sheath sticking out of the man’s bag. Since he had previous conditions placed on him not to possess any weapons, he was arrested.

Officers say the man was also in possession of about 25 grams of methamphetamine and 4.5 grams of cocaine.

He was held in custody until his next date in court.
