Greyhound’s lowest fares one way from Brandon to Winnipeg is $4.10; to Kenora $7.50; to Virden $1.65; to Regina $6.80.
Ald. R.K. Armstrong gave notice of his resignation as a member of city council effective Dec. 31. There are now seven aldermanic vacancies to be filled in Brandon’s civic election this fall.

The Western Manitoba Philharmonic Choir opens its new season with new optimism and resolve under new conductor Peter Allen.
Bids for construction of a new correctional institute in Brandon were opened by the provincial government. A Winnipeg firm, Peter Leitch Construction Ltd., was the low bidder at $6,497,000.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The first week of September saw measurable rain fall in Brandon on four separate days for a total of 34 millimetres, almost 75 per cent of the normal precipitation for the entire month of September.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
Lorne Hill, a recently retired Canada Employment Centre counsellor, has announced he will run for election in Riverview Ward. Hill will take a second run at incumbent Ross Martin, to whom he lost the 1989 municipal election.
Word has been received that former well-known Brandon resident Melva Elizabeth Crawford has died in Delta, B.C. She was 105. She spent most of her life in Brandon, where she married former Sun managing editor Howard Leslie (Krug) Crawford.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
More than 400 Brandon University students signed up for the largest recorded playing of the game Twister in Canada, as part of the launch of the new academic year.
Brandon will have two emergency sirens in place before winter, which could be used to warn nearby residents of impending danger, according to the city’s emergency co-ordinator. Brian Kayes said the city already has one test siren which will be upgraded, and a second siren will be purchased this month. Those sirens will be the first of at least 10 which Kayes said will be in place by 2009, forming an emergency warning system to cover the entire city.
TEN YEARS AGO
Forty-nine days before the federal election, the City of Brandon’s Poverty Committee has submitted a report asking for council’s support in reinstating the national long-form census, which was abolished by the federal government in 2010. The committee — which includes councillors Vanessa Hamilton (Riverview), a supporter of Liberal candidate Jodi Wyman, and Lonnie Patterson (South Centre), a supporter of NDP candidate Melissa Wastasecoot — suggests that local government and organizations are suffering because of the new standards of data collection.
