SIXTY YEARS AGO

Two private schools, stressing a fundamental Christian approach to education, are in the works for Brandon this fall. Affiliated with the Madison Crescent Baptist Church, the Brandon Christian School will open its doors Sept. 15. The other, as yet unnamed, is in the planning stages and may or may not commence this fall.

NDP deputy leader Douglas Fisher announced he is retiring from politics and will not be a candidate in the Nov. 8 federal election.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Gondola Pizza is proud to announce the reappointment of John and Jan Siemens as the management of its Brandon restaurant.

In an overall staffing report for the new school year, Supt. Les Milne said 385 teachers were presently teaching 7,742 students in the Brandon School Division.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Volunteer firefighter Richard Tippel, a Brandon accountant, teamed up with Dave Wonsul, also of Brandon, and two men from Minot, N.D., to form the first international team ever to enter the Canadian Firefighters Rodeo in Virden. Their team walked away with nine trophies during four rodeos this summer.

Brandon East NDP MLA Len Evans said an $81,590 grant awarded to the city’s chamber of commerce will be used to restore the old public library on Rosser Avenue.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Meadows Ward Coun. Rod Ficek has decided to leave city politics. Ficek, who has served the ward since 1989, will not run in the upcoming election.

Local radio personality Darryl Wolski, known better to KX-96 listeners as Darryl Evans and to his friends as “Beef,” has announced he’s taking a run at city politics. The programming assistant at the radio station will campaign in Rosser ward.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

After twice deferring the decision, city council finally voted late last night to approve a Youth for Christ proposal to build a downtown apartment block during a lengthy and sometimes heated special meeting that saw one man ejected from council chambers. The motion to sell a city-owned vacant lot at 1280 Rosser Ave. to YFC for $1 with reduced property taxes passed by a vote of seven to two.

Oak Lake veterinarian Dr. Wayne Lees is Manitoba’s first chief veterinary officer, the provincial government announced. Lees’ priorities include animal health and welfare, food safety and veterinarian public health. He intends to create early warning systems in an effort to prevent the transfer of disease from animals to people.

TEN YEARS AGO

Jail staff warned inmates that failing to wash their hands could be bad for their health — and one prisoner proved them right, by repeatedly punching another in the face for failing to scrub, the Crown alleges. Inmates were told to wash their hands after using the washroom to prevent a pinworm outbreak from spreading, and one inmate was determined to keep the unit clean. “He was going to take it upon himself to do so, and to ensure that all of the other inmates in the dorm adhere to his requests,” Crown attorney Brett Rach said.
