Looking Back

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Mayor S.A. Magnacca received the Pedestrian Program citation awarded to the City of Brandon for the second successive year by the Canadian Automotive Association. The award is made in recognition of work done by public safety people in the city in achieving an outstandingly good pedestrian casualty record in 1964. This city has not had a pedestrian fatality since March 26, 1959. Only 28 pedestrian injuries were noted, compared to the 19-city average of 38.9 for the year.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The former public health building south of Princess Avenue on Eighth Street, after being saved from demolition by city council last December, finally has some tenants. The Big Brothers Association moved into the newly renovated facilities recently.

Armed Palestinians seized the Egyptian embassy in Madrid, threatening to blow it up and kill the ambassador if Egypt did not denounce its interim peace agreement with Israel.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Olympic silver medallist Brian Orser will lead an eight-member Canadian team at the St. Ivel figure skating competition in England. Joining Orser will be Lyndon Johnston from Hamiota and his pairs partner Melinda Kunhegyi of Burlington, Ont.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Bob Crighton, a former newsman who has taught at Assiniboine Community College for the past seven years, announced he will run for city council in Meadows Ward.

Two more candidates want to make changes at city hall. Bill Comstock and Laurie McKenzie declared their intentions to seek council seats in Riverview and Meadows wards, respectively.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Things aren’t peachy on Cherry Crescent as residents prepare to mount an opposition to a digital cellphone tower slated for construction at the end of their street. Residents are concerned the tower, which is to be erected on a vacant piece of land at the corner of Cherry and 34th Street, will ruin the neighbourhood’s esthetics and put area residents in danger from the effects of radiation emanating from the tower.

TEN YEARS AGO

Assiniboine Community College has released its master plan for the development of the North Hill campus, outlining the school’s vision for the future of the sprawling historic property. The plan envisions the campus as a livable, sustainable community that will involve the construction of new buildings, while maintaining the character of existing buildings on the property that was for decades home to the Brandon Mental Health Centre. Imagined to take place in stages over a lengthy period of time — 50 years to be exact — the plan divides the current property into four “quadrants” to create a single, compact campus.

More than 50 people sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” as a fitting tribute to Don Sumner at the unveiling of the sign marking the Brandon ballpark that now honours him. Sumner’s longtime friend, Lloyd Brown, led the crowd in the song after Sumner’s wife Betty and son Ross pulled back the curtain on the green and gold sign, colours that pay tribute to Sumner’s affiliation with the Brandon Cloverleafs. Prior to his sudden death in October 2014, Sumner worked tirelessly for three years trying to get the baseball diamond formerly known as “Brandon Field” changed to another name, Brown said.
