SIXTY YEARS AGO

Heavy snows in Alberta and Saskatchewan yesterday again set back harvesting of the Prairies’ record grain crop.

Florence English of Hamiota has just returned from a two-year teaching engagement at a girls’ secondary school in Saltpond, Ghana.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Henry Schol has been chosen above 37 other applications from across the country as the new manager of the Keystone Centre. He is currently employed with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce.

The Brandon Mental Health Centre held its 52nd graduation exercises at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. Twenty-eight psychiatric nurses received their diplomas.

FORTY YEARS AGO

About 250 people went through the gates of Brandon’s first Folk Music and Arts Festival at Brandon University. Festival organizers had expected 400 people to turn out for the event.

Motorists are jumping to the pump today after most service stations in Brandon dropped the price for gasoline by six cents a litre. The price of regular gas went down to 44.0 cents a litre from 50.4 cents.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Lois Fjeldsted has decided to put down the gavel for good. Fjeldsted, who has opened Brandon school board meetings for the past two years, revealed she will not be seeking re-election.

Ten regional health authorities will be established in rural and northern Manitoba to allow more local control over the planning and delivery of health care, Health Minister Jim McCrae announced yesterday.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Three Brandon residents and 15 in the surrounding area have contracted West Nile virus, according to Manitoba Health. To date in Brandon, one patient has developed the West Nile virus non-neurological syndrome, another the more serious neurological syndrome and the latest case remains under investigation. In the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority, eight suffered the non-neurological syndrome, three the neurological syndrome and four remain under investigation.

Westman residents can debate the value of a name on Oct. 12, when the Keystone Centre hosts a public forum about selling the rights to its name to a private company. The session will give the public a chance to learn more about how the centre could benefit financially by selling its name.

TEN YEARS AGO

A large surplus in the Brandon School Division’s budget has some school board trustees debating how the money should be spent. The BSD revealed at its Monday board meeting that a surplus of $977,000 in the operating budget was incurred over the last fiscal year, which ended this past June.

All four Brandon-Souris candidates faced off in their first debate Tuesday evening, answering questions on topics ranging from the closure of Veterans Affairs offices to income-splitting and taxation. But the biggest issue seemed to centre around health care.
