Walter Dinsdale, the former northern affairs minister in the Diefenbaker cabinet, received a standing ovation from the more than 300 party supporters who filled the Avalon Theatre in Souris to endorse his nomination as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the riding.
Canada acquired its first wholly owned submarine in a sunlit flutter of red maple leaves, sedate naval ceremony and the bubbling splash of Niagara champagne.

The Brandon public library is starting an exchange program for comic books.
Casey Stengel, baseball’s “Old Perfesser” who piloted one New York team to unprecedented triumphs and another to amazingly popular losses, died of cancer. He was 85.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society has donated more than $15,000 to the organization’s national office to further research into treatment and possible cures for the disease. This is the most the local group has ever donated to research.
Gladys Coates has been returned for a second turn as president of the Wheat City Lawn Bowling Club.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Brandon University received its largest gift ever today — a $2-million endowment for the school’s business administration program. Half of the endowment comes from Seafam Corp. The company promised the school in 1989 to match funds if it raised $1 million.
A new brand of Sears store is coming to downtown Brandon. Sears Canada will open its second independent dealer store in the city next week, a hybrid of its retail and catalogue operation.

Downtown Brandon needs city council’s help if it is ever going to stop its slow decline, Errol Black says. The Riverview councillor wants a special session of council to come up with a “coherent” strategy to revitalize the area.
More than 300 people packed into the cafeteria at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School last night to hear all about crystal meth — how it’s made, how prevalent it is and what can be done to stop it from spreading. Brandon School Division Supt. Donna Michaels told the crowd that while crystal meth is rare in Westman, it has the potential to spread quickly.
TEN YEARS AGO
The provincial NDP’s ship is still taking on water, according to a new poll from Probe Research. Support for Premier Greg Selinger’s NDP dipped to one-in-four decided voters in the province with the Liberals becoming the largest beneficiary of the four per cent drop from a June survey.
Despite results that suggest some students in the Brandon School Division are struggling in the areas of literacy and math, Brandon School Division Supt. Donna Michaels says she is pleased with the division’s student achievement results for the 2014-15 school year. Numbers presented to the BSD board Monday night showed that 35 per cent of students in grades 3 and 4 are below grade level in reading, and 48 per cent of students in grades 3 and 4 are below grade level in numeracy outcomes. Less than one third of students in Grade 7 are meeting grade level expectations in numeracy outcomes.
