Kevin Bell, a Hamiota resident, is one of only dozens across Canada to be honoured as a blood donor and Canadian Blood Services volunteer — a role he took on with a passion after transfusions helped save the lives of his son and wife. Bell, 41, said his nightmare came true when his son Jayson was diagnosed with leukemia in 1995. Then, cancer struck his wife Wendy in the form of a rare bone marrow cancer called acute myelofibrosis. With the help of transfusions and other treatments, Wendy and Jayson have been in remission for years. Realizing the transfusions kept his loved ones alive, Bell started giving blood. He has donated 20 times in the last seven or eight years, has helped set up Canadian Blood Services donor clinics in Hamiota and is registered as a potential bone marrow donor.
