Incumbents Ken Burgess, Ken Knight and Leo Clermont in the city and Ken Beever in rural Ward 3 were returned to their seats on the Brandon school board in yesterday’s trustee elections. They will be joined by newcomer Jean Cook, who will replace the other incumbent candidate, Mike Spack.
FORTY YEARS AGO
A 60-centimetre-long python was stolen from Wendy’s Pet Centre. The three-month-old python was apparently taken by a two-person shoplifting team.
The union representing Brandon Eaton’s workers will consider wage reductions if the company can prove pay cuts are needed to keep the store profitable.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The enormous volume of long-distance calls on Wednesday evenings has forced the Manitoba Telephone System to cut short the 10-cent-a-minute Wednesday evening promotion it has been running in October.
Investor fears that Canada may break up in a week caused the Canadian dollar to plunge and stock markets to take a beating with consumers next on the Quebec referendum hit list. The dollar toppled almost a full cent to 72.99 cents US.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Dedication to suicide prevention has earned a Brandon woman a national award. Kathy Foley, a Brandon Regional Health Authority program educator, is this year’s recipient of the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention Service Award. It’s the first time the award has been given to a Manitoban.
A 911 call resulted in a five-hour standoff yesterday that finally ended when heavily armed police officers stormed a house and arrested the man who made the call. At least nine police officers, including assault rifle-wielding members of the Tactical Response Unit, and two police dogs surrounded the home on Cornwallis Crescent.
TEN YEARS AGO
A poll-by-poll breakdown of Monday’s federal election shows a clear rural-urban divide in Brandon-Souris. Of the 84 polls located within Brandon, Liberal candidate Jodi Wyman captured 61, according to Elections Canada data. The candidates tied in two Brandon polls. In the rural areas, Conservative incumbent Larry Maguire secured all but one poll — Oak Lake Reserve — which went to Wyman. Maguire received a total of 20,666 votes, followed by Wyman with 15,338. Only 50 votes separated the third and fourth candidates. The NDP’s Melissa Wastasecoot received 2,576 votes, while the Green’s David Neufeld had 2,526.
