SIXTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba spent a record $61,696,605 on beer, wine and spirits during the 1964-65 fiscal year.

Fire early yesterday morning destroyed a barn on the farm of Fermin Lesy, 10 miles southeast of Deloraine, killing 11 calves and destroying a quantity of feed.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Three people were arrested and charged last night with armed robbery following a bank holdup yesterday afternoon at the Bank of Nova Scotia branch at the Brandon Shoppers Mall on 18th Street. The stolen money, about $30,000, has been recovered.

Pilot Roy Sobchuk of Brandon, a member of the Manitoba Civil Air Patrol, and crew member Art Hussey scanned the terrain north of Brandon in search of missing Brandon pilot John Jaffery, whose plane went down on a flight from The Pas to Brandon.

FORTY YEARS AGO

City council voted unanimously to support an application by Western Manitoba Broadcasters Ltd. to obtain the licence to operate CPLP-TV, which would broadcast into Winnipeg from Portage la Prairie on Channel 13.

A large tract of land lying between Manitoba Avenue and Braecrest Drive west of the Sportsplex is currently being prepared, by a large earth mover, for Phase 2 of the Kirkcaldy Heights development plan.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

As the legislature adjourned, Paul Edwards announced he was quitting as leader of the provincial Liberal party to devote his time to his law practice.

Oak Lake cowboy Trevor Gompf posted a score of 73 on Playschool and was third in the bull-riding event on the opening night of the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association finals at the Keystone Centre.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Westman Recycling Council in Brandon issued layoff notices to its 22 employees yesterday, about a month after one of its key customers went out of business. David McConkey, general manager of the $4-million multi-product recycling operation in Brandon, said that a combination of factors has resulted in a financial crisis that he believes will mean it will probably not be able to last until Christmas.

Brandon University president Lou Visentin, author Herb Schulz, former Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer and his wife Lily were all at the launch of Schulz’s book, “A View From The Ledge,” at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall on the BU campus this week. Schulz has chronicled his days in the legislature in a candid, funny and unvarnished 511-page book.

TEN YEARS AGO

Justin Trudeau kicked off a new Liberal era Wednesday with a 30-member cabinet that features predominantly fresh faces, an equal number of men and women and probably the most diverse lineup of ministers in Canadian history. The newly minted prime minister emerged Wednesday from the formal swearing-in ceremony boasting that he has put together a cabinet “that looks like Canada.”

Canada’s top men’s and women’s curling teams are coming to Brandon next year. Curling Canada has named Brandon the host city for the 2016 Home Hardware Canada Cup, which will run from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4 at Westman Place. The teams will compete for a share of a $70,000 purse for each gender, with the winners earning a spot at the 2017 Roar of the Rings Olympic trials in Ottawa as well as the 2017 Continental Cup.
