Current prices: Polly Ann bread, seven loaves for $1; Scots bathroom tissue, 10 rolls, $1; apples, seven pounds, $1; Sea Trader shrimps, three tins for $1; luncheon meats, seven varieties, five packages for $1.

The top steer cattle sold for $24.50 at the Manitoba Southwest Feeder Sale at Pipestone. A total of 850 head were sold, with 500 labelled for export to the U.S.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Nearly one third of a million dollars changed hands in the Keystone Centre last week as Ag-Ex ’75 featured sales of five breeds of purebred cattle, plus the sale of hogs, market steers and carcasses.

Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in Virden went back to work today, leaving the Brandon post office as the only one that is still inoperative in the Westman region. This was the 24th day of the strike.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Fearing dentists may get AIDS from patients, the Manitoba Dental Association has warned its members to take special precautions when treating people in high-risk groups.

Manitoba’s consumer affairs minister is pressuring the federal government to introduce controls on the advertising of violent games and toys on television.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Colleen Gabrielle earned the gold medallist award, ranking first among 54 graduates at the convocation held this weekend during the Certified General Accountants Association of Manitoba’s annual conference.

Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories has hired veteran animal researcher and equine nutrition specialist Dr. Nadia Cymbaluk to manage the company Linwood Equine Ranch.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Hundreds of people gathered at Assiniboine Community College yesterday to hear about the benefits of organic farming. “It’s definitely a growing industry,” conference co-ordinator Julie Fine said. The market for organic food products is growing by more than 20 per cent a year, according to Fine, and many farmers are taking advantage by ditching the chemicals and going green. There are more than 200 organic farms currently registered with the Organic Producers Association of Manitoba, according to president Alex Scott.

A fatal head-on collision has renewed calls for the provincial government to twin Highway 10. A 31-year-old man from Rivers was killed yesterday when the minivan he was driving crashed into a semi-trailer just north of the Trans-Canada Highway. It was the third major head-on collision on Highway 10 this year. Arthur- Virden Progressive Conservative MLA and transportation critic Larry Maguire said the frequency of head- on collisions should prompt the government to twin the highway.

TEN YEARS AGO

The clubhouse at the Sandy Lake Golf Course was “completely destroyed” on Thursday following an early morning structure fire, according to a spokesperson from the Office of the Fire Commissioner. The OFC is investigating the cause of the blaze, but a spokesperson says the clubhouse was empty and damage is estimated at $600,000.

The Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre in Morden has secured a rare and coveted spot in the 60th anniversary edition of the Guinness World Records print book. The 2016 print book features Bruce, the world’s longest publicly exhibited mosasaur, which is 13 metres long and is on display at the centre.
