A spokesman for the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, which represents 43 striking workers at the Brandon British American Oil refinery, said he will seek a meeting with BA officials this week in an effort to settle the dispute.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Thanks to the use of a citizen’s band radio and a call to the Brandon RCMP headquarters, Art Lamb of Killarney managed to save the lives of several people caught in a storm off the coast of Florida. Through a freak of nature, Lamb’s two-way radio picked up the Mayday call of a commercial fishing boat, the Blue Marlin, which was caught in a fierce storm.

Mr. B’s Furniture Warehouse at 3635 Victoria Ave. is now bigger. It officially opens tomorrow with more than 700,000 cubic feet worth of furniture warehouse and showroom space.

Carberry RCMP reported that 910 litres of sodium hydroxide were accidentally dumped at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Provincial Trunk Highway 5 when a container fell from the back of a Carberry Transfer delivery truck.

Farmers, especially those who grow grain, are enjoying the best returns in years. Net cash income of farms reached a six-year high in 1994, rising 11 per cent to $5.9 billion, Statistics Canada reported today.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Crime is on the rise, but the number of Mounties in some detachments has dropped, leaving some rural residents frustrated with lengthy response times. The notion of 24-hour policing in this region is a myth, local officers confirm, thanks in part to a lack of officers. They don’t advertise it, but they don’t deny they’re on-call during certain hours and often have to pick and choose which calls to go to.

A federal bill that recognizes the internment of Ukrainian Canadians during the First World War will finally be put into the Canadian law books after it passed through the Senate yesterday afternoon. Bill C-331, dubbed the Internment of Persons of Ukrainian Origin Recognition Act, calls upon the federal government to acknowledge that thousands of Ukrainian Canadians were unjustly interned and disenfranchised in Canada between 1914 and 1920.

TEN YEARS AGO

A major redevelopment project to transform one of Brandon’s most historic and recognizable buildings has been halted. B.C.-based Resland Development Group will not proceed with leading the McKenzie Towers project, a major blow for the city’s downtown revitalization plans.

The two candidates vying for Premier Greg Selinger’s job didn’t mince words at the first provincial leaders debate ahead of the 2016 provincial election. Both Progressive Conservative Leader Brian Pallister and Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari came out swinging at the event, held at the Keystone Centre as part of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities annual convention.
