More than half of retired Canadians live below the poverty line, says a report on retirement by the Canadian Council on Social Development. The council defines poverty as an annual income of $7,028 or lower for a family of four.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The federal government will contribute $150 million in drought relief for Prairie farmers, but more than one-third of the money won’t be available until spring. About 30,000 farmers will be eligible for assistance. It would amount to an average payment of $5,000 per farmer.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Silt and debris has plugged the only inlet into Pelican Lake, and residents of the resort town of Ninette are baffled as to why a federal agency is blocking them from clearing it out. No natural streams feed into Pelican Lake, so an artificial inlet was built a decade ago to control the lake’s water level. The lake is large but shallow, and susceptible to heavy algae blooms and low oxygen levels when the water is low.
TEN YEARS AGO
A major fundraising campaign to restore the historic Dome Building on the Keystone Centre grounds has reached the halfway point. Restoring the Glory has raised approximately $3.5 million of the $7.2-million goal. “We have completed a lot of the heritage restoration, we have sewer and water dug in … One of the highlights was the restoration of the original windows,” said Ron Kristjansson, general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. “We’ve put in new energy-efficient interior windows and we’re working on the design plans for the interior of the building.”
Overage forward Jason Gutierrez had a pair of goals for the Lethbridge Hurricanes as they beat the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 4-2 on Friday. In the first of two Western Hockey League games in Alberta on successive nights for Brandon, the Wheat Kings (14-8-0-2) squandered a first-period lead after the Hurricanes (16-9-0-0) scored the last three goals of the game.
