SIXTY YEARS AGO

A new commercial apartment block may spring up at the corner of 10th Street and Princess Avenue if an application for a zoning variance is cleared by Brandon City Council.

Seven western Manitoba agricultural leaders were honoured at the annual Farmers’ Night of the Brandon Kiwanis Club. Those honoured were: Howard Baron, Carberry; Walter Borotsik, Forrest; D.F. Rose, Carroll; Ross Mitchell, Douglas; Gordon Wilson, Reston; and Walter Johnston and R.E. Forbes of Brandon.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Two Brandon University professors, Virgil Logan and Betty Gibson, both of the education faculty, have been named professors emeritus of the university.

City police have issued a Canada-wide alert for former Brandon city police chief Harry Collister, 77, who has been missing since Friday.

FORTY YEARS AGO

November 1985 will go in the record books as the second coldest November since weather records were kept in Brandon. The coldest November on record was in 1896, when the mean temperature for the month was -16 C. The mean temperature this November was -13 C.

In a speech laced with anti-NDP rhetoric, provincial Tory Leader Gary Filmon told 500 delegates at the Keystone Centre that government spending is way out of hand.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Brandon has an oversupply of doctors, according to a committee advising the province on how to spend its health dollars. A report by the Physicians Health Committee says that Brandon has the highest surplus of doctors in Manitoba, which is five physicians too many.

Top scientists, using scientific models to predict the weather, have finally convinced governments that man-made emissions have an impact on climate.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Beresford United Church has been sold. Deconsecrated more than 30 years ago, the church became home to the Beresford Community Club, which hosted numerous Christmas concerts, teas and baby and wedding showers over the years. But dwindling population forced the club to fold and sell the church building. There’s no word on what will occupy the aged structure.

The ribbon was cut at Safeway Canada’s newest Lifestyles store at the Corral Centre yesterday afternoon as eager shoppers streamed in to tour the new building and sample fresh fruit, Starbucks coffee, and in-store discounts. Brandon Mayor Dave Burgess and Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Merv Tweed gave opening comments, and congratulated the company on its new store.

TEN YEARS AGO

A Brandon police officer who was repeatedly stabbed while making an arrest is recovering at home with his family. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old man accused of stabbing him remains in jail. In supplying an update, the Brandon Police Service says that the officer, Const. Marc DeDecker, managed to make the arrest despite being stabbed five times.

More than 2,300 people are calling on the City of Brandon to build a new Eighth Street bridge, citing safety concerns and daily inconvenience. A petition has been circulated in the city’s north end, garnering thousands of signatures from concerned residents and business owners.
