CBC said it plans to open about 50 television outlets and about 90 radio outlets during the next five years in areas that now are unserved.

Earl Thompson, leader of the Basswood 4-H Beef Club, has been named winner of the highest honour given to 4-H leaders in Manitoba. Thompson was given the W.S. Fraser award for his 21-year record of achievement as leader of the club.

FORTY YEARS AGO

About 30 per cent of an estimated 700 Brandon University students failed a test examining their ability to write grammatically correct English, says a BU assistant professor of English.

Manitoba patients are travelling to the United States because of delays in getting sophisticated X-ray tests and the provincial government is footing the bill. Health records show that at least 100 Manitobans received computer tomography X-rays, or CT scans, in the U.S. during the last eight months.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Stu Cowie was elected president of the Brandon Real Estate Board.

Canada Pension Plan benefits will rise 1.8 per cent on Jan. 1. For new beneficiaries who retire at age 65, the maximum benefit will rise to $727.08 a month from the 1995 rate of $713.19. Old age security rates for the January to March period will remain at the current level of $394.76.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

After a bloody and deadly summer on Highway 10, and repeated calls for attention by the Brandon Sun, the NDP government has quietly approved funding to buy land for future construction of passing lanes on Highway 10 between Brandon and Minnedosa. In a letter to Minnedosa Progressive Conservative MLA Leanne Rowat dated Dec. 9, Transportation Minister Ron Lemieux stated that capital program funds had been approved “for acquisition of right-of-way required to construct passing lanes.”

Former governor general Ed Schreyer will announce today he will join Jack Layton’s NDP team to run as the party’s candidate in Selkirk-Interlake. Schreyer’s decision to run again for the party in which he served as both an MP and Manitoba’s first NDP premier marks the first time someone appointed to the role of Queen’s representative, who is required to be above politics, has returned to active politics.

TEN YEARS AGO

A second Old Order Mennonite man has been sent to jail for his part in the systematic abuse of children at his Manitoba community. He was a key player in a larger system of abuse that left children with both physical and emotional scars. At the hands of various abusers, one girl was strapped, shocked with a cattle prod, deprived of sleep, made to sit in a strenuous position and made to stand for more than a day.
