SIXTY YEARS AGO

Both the students and faculty at Brandon College are pressing to raise the college to university status.

Manitoba Pool Elevators paid tribute to two longtime members, Bob MacPherson and Roy Clark, at a dinner at the North Hill Motel. MacPherson has been secretary for 37 years and Clark has been a member of the board for 33 years, 19 as president.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Rifle and shotgun registration would be unrealistic, administratively unworkable and would have no effect on deterring crime, according to the president of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation.

Less than five years old, Shoppers Mall now has its third set of owners, Bramalea Consolidated Developments Ltd. of Toronto. The previous owners were Trizec Corp. of Montreal.

FORTY YEARS AGO

At the end of the day-long budget talks at Brandon City Hall, tax increases stood at approximately 2.5 per cent. It was expected to be only 1.4 per cent when talks began.

A newly renovated hospital in Gladstone is cutting back service because of a shortage of doctors. The town only has one doctor left, and he won’t be offering services after regular office hours or on weekends, a spokesman for the Seven Region Health Centre Board reported.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba Hydro is looking at moving its Brandon control centre and eight jobs to Winnipeg.

There was a time not so long ago when the toque was a symbol of weakness to school children everywhere. But these days, the toque has experienced a sudden surge in popularity. Licensed apparel — jerseys, jackets, sweatshirts, toques, hats — are the hot sellers this Christmas in Brandon sporting-goods stores. And the craze appears to have no end in sight.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

As quickly and nearly as mysteriously as it was erected, a three-storey-high tower in the city’s south end has been removed. Described as an eyesore by people who lived nearby, the tower stood for only four days at the intersection of Ninth Street and Aberdeen Avenue before city crews took it down. Mayor Dave Burgess said yesterday that someone made a mistake when he or she decided to install the imposing metal structure without consulting city councillors or area residents, so he ordered it be taken down.

TEN YEARS AGO

There is a renewed sense of optimism among Indigenous people, according to a Westman leader who recently returned from the Assembly of First Nations conference hosted in Gatineau, Que. Waywayseecappo Chief Murray Clearsky said there has been a change of tone from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau compared to the administration led by Stephen Harper. The symbolism of Trudeau walking with AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde in the grand entry wasn’t lost on Clearsky.

Reid Duke had two goals as the Brandon Wheat Kings rebounded from a second-period deficit to beat the Kamloops Blazers 5-3 at Westman Place on Wednesday.
