FIFTY YEARS AGO

The new Betty Gibson School opened today and the first students to use the new facility on the old Alexandra School site were the kindergarten class.

Farmers have donated 14,000 bushels of grain to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank since November, and organizers say it will stay open until last year’s total is matched. Leonard Lepp said Foodgrains Bank volunteers hope to collect at least 20,000 bushels of grain at the old Manitoba Pool Elevator on Pacific Avenue.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba homes will soon have greater access to television coverage and cable companies will soon have competition. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved local SkyCable Inc., a division of Craig Broadcast Systems Inc., application to deliver wireless cable signals in the province.

Alice Topp was all smiles as she got off her bus for the last time today. The veteran school bus driver, who got behind the wheel for the first time Oct. 21, 1975, drove to her last stop at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School to be met by parents and students bearing gifts and goodwill. Topp has driven two generations of students in some families.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A spruce tree smack in the middle of Neepawa’s Riverside Cemetery has been chopped down and the timing — a week before Christmas — has a town official wondering if it’s festively decorated in someone’s living room. The missing spruce was planted a decade ago and is ideal Christmas tree height.

TEN YEARS AGO

Mere days before Christmas, two out of Manitoba’s three major political parties are toying with the idea of playing Robin Hood instead of Santa Claus. Manitoba’s Liberals have joined the governing New Democrats in mulling the idea of placing a surtax on the wealthiest of provincial taxpayers.

Amanda Williams had been to the United Kingdom twice before her appearance with the Canadian Maple Leafs women’s rugby 15s team earlier this month, but she will always remember her third visit. The Souris native was among 24 players on the roster who competed in a two-match series against England’s top academy players. Canada lost the opener 37-29 and the second contest 22-19.
