SIXTY YEARS AGO
The first step in a five-year plan to integrate extended care and intensive care hospital facilities in Brandon will be taken Jan. 1, when administrative control of Assiniboine Hospital passes from the Manitoba Sanatorium Board to the Brandon General Hospital board of directors.
Prime Minister Lester Pearson announced that Canada will provide $15 million worth of food to famine-stricken India.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
An explosion that ripped through a baggage area at La Guardia Airport in New York and killed at least 11 people was the city’s biggest bomb blast in recent memory. It had the force of about 75 sticks of dynamite.
Dr. Robert Harvey, a minister for many years in the western Manitoba area and an author, died yesterday in Brandon at the age of 92.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Metropolitan Stores of Canada Ltd. has decided to demolish the top two floors of its Brandon store, leaving the main floor intact as a retail operation.
The U.S. government has offered its support to any country that can wipe out the terrorist group that killed five Americans and 13 others in co-ordinated attacks on the Rome and Vienna airports.
Time magazine named Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping as its Man of the Year for 1985, crediting him with introducing “sweeping economic reforms that have challenged Marxist orthodoxies and liberated the productive energies of a billion people.”
THIRTY YEARS AGO
So far this festive season, the Brandon Police Service has charged only 33 people with impaired driving during its annual special traffic enforcement program. In the same period last year, 54 drivers were charged.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
A rocket found at a home in the RM of Oakland turned out to be a replica, Brandon RCMP say. Cpl. Gary Bardal said the rocket was inspected by military experts, who determined it wasn’t active.
Think Winnipeg is the only Manitoba city that showcases great-looking polar bears? Think again. Motorists travelling along First Street have been doing double-takes for the past two weeks as they pass the Hillcrest Motel and Domo gas bar. Three large sculptures sit in front of the gas bar along the curb, all thanks to the handiwork of local snow artist Ron Baryluk. The motel and gas bar owner sculpted a large polar bear looking down — somewhat disgustedly — at a smaller baby bear frolicking upside down in the snow. Beside them sits a large sculpted head sporting a toque, a beard, a grimace and a cigar.
TEN YEARS AGO
Westman travellers will soon have another daily flight to and from Calgary, thanks to WestJet Encore’s expanded air service. As of Jan. 16, a flight will depart Brandon at 6 a.m., and arrive in Calgary at 7:28 a.m. local time. The existing flight will remain; it leaves Brandon at 1:20 p.m. and arrives in Calgary at 2:37 p.m. Calgary-Brandon flights depart at 9:45 a.m. to arrive in the Wheat City at 12:45 p.m. A new return flight will depart Calgary at 7:50 p.m., arriving in Brandon at 10:50 p.m.
