Looking Back

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Cigarette and cigar smoking is going to cost Brandonites more this year, but just how much more isn’t known yet. Some Brandon retailers jumped their prices to 60 cents for a package of 25 cigarettes, while others added only one cent to the current price of 57 cents.

Canadians have won the title of the world’s most frequent telephone users for the 13th consecutive year.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Due to overwhelming popularity of roller skating at the Keystone Centre, manager Henry Schol has announced a third session for Sunday.

The Brandon weather office this morning recorded a temperature of -37 C, the coldest day so far this winter.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Premier Howard Pawley said he will consider rolling back an expected 10-cent hike in the cost of a loaf of bread if the increase comes about.

The Manitoba Teachers’ Society will again ask teachers to support a resolution calling for the strap to be banned from the province’s schools.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Brandon Fire Department was called to two Brandon homes last night when residents called 911 after smelling gas outside. According to Capt. Tom Sherb, the -35 C weather affected the gas meter seals and caused them to leak.

More than 950 jobs have been created in the last decade with a $4-million investment by a federal development corporation. Figures released by the Wheat Belt Community Corp. illustrate the impact the “lender of last resort” has had on the Westman region over the past 10 years.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The federal election campaign has stymied any agreement to build a cattle slaughter facility in Neepawa, says Gary Doer. The premier said the province will consider investing in a new wastewater treatment facility in Neepawa to replace the existing overburdened facility. It would benefit not only the town, but the Springhill Farms hog plant and a cattle slaughter facility proposed by Natural Prairie Beef, which is owned by a group of Manitoba investors.

TEN YEARS AGO

The provincial government announced its largest-ever increase to public school funding on Tuesday, but it will be some time before the Brandon School Division knows how much of a bump it is set to receive. Ahead of the April 19 election, the government announced it will give $1.3 billion to public schools in the coming year — which works out to an increase of $32.5 million or 2.55 per cent. The 2016-17 total funding boost is above the rate of economic growth and is the NDP’s largest increase in school funding during its 16 years in power.

A scholarship at Brandon University will be created in memory of Len Evans, who served in the Manitoba legislature for three decades. The former NDP MLA for Brandon East passed away suddenly last weekend at the age of 86.
