SIXTY YEARS AGO
Committees of the Brandon School Division and the Division No. 40 Manitoba Teachers’ Society local completed negotiations on a new salary schedule. In a joint announcement, the two bodies said the new agreement will give teachers in the city’s four high schools annual increases of eight to 10 per cent.
T.J. (Tom) Inglis, music teacher for Vincent Massey School, was appointed the first music co-ordinator of Brandon School Division No. 40.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Novice dance pair Lillian Heming of Brandon and Blake Miller of Portage la Prairie turned in a silver-medal performance at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in London, Ont.
Gary Johnston, manager of the Toronto-Dominion Bank branch at 10th Street and Victoria Avenue, has been appointed chairman of the Brandon chapter of the Manitoba Heart Foundation.

Deborah Bright, president and CEO of Special Olympics Canada was in Brandon recently to attend an organizational meeting for the 2006 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, being held in the city from July 18-22. Bright presented Bernie Chrisp, chairman of the Games Organizing Committee, with a cheque for $100,000 payable to the Host Society from Special Olympics Canada.
TEN YEARS AGO
High-volume water users spoke out Tuesday night about drastic rate increases being proposed by the city. The Public Utilities Board held a public hearing on the proposal, which would see a 44 per cent hike over the next five years. For commercial and industrial users, the impact will be two-fold, as the tiered-rate system would also be eliminated.
On the last day before the election blackout period, the province announced it would help fund a major redevelopment of the Parkland Building at Assiniboine Community College’s North Hill campus. The revamp of the 103-year-old building will cost an estimated $98.1 million and the province says it will cover up to two-thirds, or $65.4 million, of that price tag — although the project is still contingent on federal backing.
