SIXTY YEARS AGO

Five bridges are being constructed this winter in western Manitoba on newly created provincial roads, Highways Minister Walter Weir has reported. The largest is a $40,000 bridge over the Souris River on Provincial Road 447, north of Medora.

George McCulloch of Brandon was elected president of the Manitoba Real Estate Association.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Prices for premium gasoline will move close to and possibly above $1 a gallon in much of the country as a result of oil price increases this summer, government sources say.

Margaret Jean Mann, well known in western Manitoba as a music teacher, has died in Winnipeg hospital after a lengthy illness. She taught music in the Pipestone and Reston districts for several years before joining the conservatory department of Brandon University’s School of Music in 1949.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The U.S. space shuttle Challenger exploded into a gigantic fireball moments after liftoff, apparently killing all seven crew members, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher selected as America’s first citizen in space.

Fourteen Lebanese students arrived in Brandon for a two-year stint at Assiniboine Community College.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

About 15 workers formed an informational picket outside the Brandon General Hospital to let people know about looming service cuts and the erosion of the medicare system.

Former Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Chief Katherine Whitecloud was elected to the Manitoba regional chief position of the Assembly of First Nations. She’s the first woman to ever hold the Manitoba regional chief position, and the only the third female regional chief in Canadian history.

TEN YEARS AGO

Nearly half of Canada’s military personnel has a history of childhood abuse, new research rom the University of Manitoba shows. About 47 per cent of Canadian Forces regular members experienced some type of physical or sexual abuse prior to joining the military, compared with 33 per cent of the general public who were abused as children.

Labour shortages remain the No. 1 challenge faced by local businesses, according to a new Brandon Chamber of Commerce business climate survey. Results of the survey were presented by chamber president Jordan Ludwig and Carla Milne of MNP on Wednesday at the Keystone Centre.

A two-on-one beating in an alley has brought a jail sentence for a woman who got caught when she left her purse and ID behind at the crime scene. During sentencing in provincial court this week, Judge John Combs called the attack “a vicious assault that needs to be dealt with, in my view, in a manner that reflects that.”
