FIFTY YEARS AGO

The 1975 Criminal Code amendment bill passed through the House of Commons yesterday. It partly repeals the 1972 bail reforms to make it difficult for killers, drug dealers and repeaters to get bail. It opens drivers to mandatory acceptance of roadside police checks for signs of intoxication.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Phil Schwarz, a Birtle-area farmer, was nominated to run for the New Democratic Party in the Virden constituency in the next provincial election.

The Brandon School Division and its 443 teachers have settled on a 1986 contract that provides for a three per cent pay increase.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A fire completely destroyed the Bedrock Autobody Shop in Killarney. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

They call it Friendly Manitoba, but the province holds the ignoble distinction of having the highest rate of auto theft in Canada in 1994. Manitoba’s rate of 12 thefts for every 1,000 registered vehicles is higher than the national average in both Canada and the United States.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Corral Centre is now 93 per cent leased with the confirmed addition of Michaels, which will be located beside Winners, and Kelsey’s. The foundation for Michaels is already underway. Winners is expected to open in May. There are only seven vacancies left.

Traffic officers have been monitoring the city’s construction zones, and in the last two weeks, two drivers were fined more than $1,000 in the 3500 block of Richmond Avenue East for going 98 km/h and 105 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Manitoba is looking at overhauling the layout of 10 emergency rooms — including at the Brandon Regional Health Centre — across the province after the death of an Indigenous man during a 34-hour wait. But the family of Brian Sinclair, who died in a Winnipeg emergency room in 2008, says changing the configuration of ERs won’t address the reason why the 45-year-old died without treatment.
