Looking Back

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Here we go again. Yesterday was Groundhog Day, and our little groundhog burrowed his way out of his snow-encrusted hole, saw his shadow and quickly hurried back. That, of course, means six more weeks of winter.

A massive education program reaching from kindergarten to management institutes was forecast today in the provincial speech from the throne. The 17-point education program, the most comprehensive on upgrading education facilities since Premier Dufferin Roblin’s Progressive Conservative government was elected in 1958, dominated the speech.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Souris has been selected as the site for the 1976 Westman Regional Summer Games by the Manitoba Games Council.

Lillian Heming of Brandon and Blake Miller of Portage la Prairie were special guests of council at its regular meeting last night. The two were honoured for their silver-medal performance in the novice dance competition at the Canadian figure skating championships in London, Ont.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Most of Canada’s cattle, hog and sheep farmers have been placed under the umbrella of a new national program, the national stabilization plan.

More new cases of a rare form of cancer closely associated with asbestos have been found in the Prairies and in Quebec, where the mineral is mined and used in manufacturing.

Brandon University will team up with the city and the Brandon Kinsmen Club to work on a 10-year scheme for upgrading the Kinsmen Stadium at Louise Avenue and 18th Street.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Approximately 20,000 items of residential mail were not delivered yesterday because one-third of Brandon’s postal carriers thought it was unsafe to be out in the frigid cold weather. It was -56 C with the wind chill when employees arrived at work.

Brandon schools are banning the strap. The leather-like belt, which has been used on students in the Brandon School Division since the 1890s, is now considered obsolete.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Two Manitoba companies are among 50 in the country to receive Canada’s Best Managed Companies Award for exceptional business practices in 2005. Brandon-based Murray Automotive Group, a family-run network of car dealerships in Western Canada including Murray Chevrolet Cadillac on Richmond Avenue, was chosen, along with Altona-based Golden West Broadcasting Ltd., which operates 24 Prairie radio stations.

TEN YEARS AGO

Following low visitor numbers in 2015, the fledgling Brandon General Museum and Archives hopes to get the word out about its offerings to attract more traffic. The museum’s website is undergoing a revamp, and it plans to increase social media presence, according to Coun. Jeff Harwood (University), a member of the BGMA board.

Broadcaster and author Wab Kinew is running for a seat in the Manitoba legislature, providing a boost for the NDP government that has struggled with low poll numbers and the departure of longtime members. Kinew said Tuesday he is seeking the NDP nomination in the Fort Rouge constituency in Winnipeg — the seat held by former finance minister Jennifer Howard, who announced last week she will not seek re-election.
