FORTY YEARS AGO
Brandon airport handled more traffic than usual yesterday due to fog at the Winnipeg International Airport. Today, the Brandon airport was also fogged in, preventing aircraft from flying into the city and stranding some large airplanes on the ground.
Mass murderer Charles Manson’s sixth bid for parole was rejected after he unexpectedly attended a hearing at which he was described as a “caged, vicious, wild animal.”
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Air travellers leaving Winnipeg this month will be the first passengers in the country to be subjected to new carry-on luggage regulations. If their carry-on suitcase does not fit into a box-like measuring device at Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International check-in counters, it must be checked.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Kelly Mathison of Countryside Equipment in Brandon was elected the 2006 president of Canada West Equipment Dealers Association at the 65th Canada West annual meeting held last month in Saskatoon. Canada West represents approximately 400 agricultural, industrial and outdoor power equipment dealerships in Western Canada.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Brandon Bluefins Swim Club is struggling to stay afloat due to the lengthy Sportsplex pool closure. Numbers are down significantly and the club expects to have a shortfall of at least $10,000 this year. While renovations are being undertaken at their home pool, the club is grateful to be able to use the pool at CFB Shilo’s recreation centre. But the club is only able to secure pool time three or four days per week for classes, compared to five days a week at the Sportsplex.
The Keystone Centre is poised to receive $500,000 in 2016 from the City of Brandon for capital improvements — as long as the province comes on board with matching funds. A majority of the city funds ($400,000) will come out of the accommodation tax reserve, which would be the largest capital grant provided through the program to date.
