SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Descriptive plans for the addition to the Brandon Post Office building to house all the government offices in the city have been released by the federal Department of Public Works. The new structure, scheduled to be completed by April 1957, will be of reinforced concrete on steel to tie in with the construction of the existing building.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

The death of Roy William (Bob) Fox, 61, occurred in the city today. Fox, acting manager of the Brandon Hotel, was born in Boissevain but had lived in Brandon since 1924.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Attorney General Howard Pawley has announced the appointment of Cyril Donald of Virden as limited jurisdiction magistrate, succeeding George Nugent.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Canadian dollar crashed through the 70-cent barrier today, opening trade on the foreign exchange markets at 69.88 cents US, an all-time trading low against the American currency.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

City council approved a new five-year funding arrangement for the Keystone Centre with no debate. The bylaw, to provide for the raising of money for the centre through property taxes, passed by a 7-2 vote.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The organizer of the Lieutenant Governor’s Winter Festival says the annual event’s biggest problem is that it has become too popular. “It’s a good problem, but it’s still a problem,” Tom Keep said yesterday. “There are concerns with respect to venue sizes.” Although the final attendance figures are not yet available, Keep said he’s “fairly confident” more people attended the festival this year than last year. There were about 20,000 visitors to the Winter Festival in 2005.

Disappointed with her performance at the Canadian trials over the weekend, Brandon’s Jenna Kerbis had written off any hopes of competing in next month’s Commonwealth Games. But then the scores came in. The Brandon Eagles Gymnastics Club member finished fifth at the trials in Mississauga, Ont., earning the final spot on the national team that will compete in Melbourne, Australia, March 15-25.

TEN YEARS AGO

An Alberta man is in jail after allegedly stealing an SUV and gas while intoxicated and leading police on a dramatic chase that spanned two towns, included a collision with a police cruiser and saw a Mountie fire shots at the suspect after being dragged by his vehicle.

Growing up in Brandon, home-cooked meals were a must in Jacqueline Clark’s home. As she watched her father cook and garden, a passion for food developed from a young age. The former Brandonite will vie for the title of MasterChef Canada. Season 3 of the hit program premieres on CTV on Feb. 14.
