Jack Benny and his Love-in-Bloom concert with and for the Tampa Philharmonic Orchestra attracted an audience of nearly 7,000 persons, including Florida Gov. Haydon Burns. Prominent as a guest violinist with the orchestra was Jack Benny’s teacher, Albert Pratz of Brandon College’s School of Music.

The Grade 5 class at King George School was recently named winner in the name-the-safety-birds contest. The safety birds mounted on the new Brandon City Police safety cars will be known as Safety Sal and Cautious Cal.

Canadian money is a bargain in Mexico. The Royal Bank of Canada was selling 425 pesos for the Canadian dollar today, compared to 359 pesos two weeks ago.

Brandon University will get the $150,000 it wants from the city — but that amount will apparently be spread over three years.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in addressing his party’s failure to elect anyone from Canada’s second- and third-largest cities, employed the kind of tactics that Conservatives once decried in previous Liberal governments. He lured a Vancouver Liberal star, David Emerson, to become his international trade minister and made an unelected Montreal businessman, Michael Fortier, a senator and public works minister in one fell swoop.

The Brandon Police Service will add another weapon to its arsenal now that city council has approved the purchase of 20 Taser-brand electrical stun guns. Council voted last night to buy the Tasers at a cost of $61,000.

TEN YEARS AGO

Jayce Hawryluk had a pair of first period goals as the Brandon Wheat Kings built a 4-0 lead early and went on to beat the Prince George Cougars 8-3 at Westman Place on Friday. John Quenneville had two goals and two assists, Hawryluk had three goals and an assist and Ivan Provorov added four assists for the Wheat Kings.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights exceeded its own expectations in its first six months after opening, but a still unsettled tax dispute with the City of Winnipeg could put the museum more than $4 million in debt.

A man who terrorized his ex-girlfriend with threats and phone calls been sentenced to two years in jail. Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta described the offender’s actions as “relationship terrorism.”
