SIXTY YEARS AGO
Yesterday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., students from the four Brandon high schools and from Brandon College protested the fact that there are no student tickets sold at the door of the Strand Theatre on Friday and Saturday nights. Student prices are available for high school students with student cards — 60 cents for matinees and 75 cents for evening shows.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Plans are progressing at Sioux Valley Dakota Nation for a $410,000 recreation complex consisting of a regulation-size ice surface, two sheets of ice for curling and an auditorium.
Joe Clark, a tough young Albertan, was victorious at the national Progressive Conservative leadership convention yesterday, winning over Claude Wagner. The final count, one of the closest ever in national politics, was 1,187 for Clark and 1,122 for Wagner.

Riding Mountain National Park and its surrounding municipalities will join a selected network of more than 200 similar regions worldwide in April when it is declared a biosphere reserve by the United Nations.

A Brandon businessman is adding another store to his stable of retail operations. Cam Wirch, co-owner of Rosser Avenue’s A & L Cycle and Ski and Grass Roots Authentic Wear in the Brandon Gallery with his wife Colleen, is opening a Quark’s Shoes franchise in Shoppers Mall. The shop will open Sept. 1 in the space presently occupied by Naturalizer Shoes.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Brandon, like the rest of Manitoba and Canada, is experiencing a shortage of both blue- and white-collar employees — but especially the former. On Brandon’s most-wanted list: nurses, cooks, electricians, carpenters, long-haul truck drivers, sales managers, administrative officers, office clerks, customer service people, pharmacists, retail salespeople, welders, machine operators, butchers, loan officers, filing clerks, postal workers, engineers, safety inspectors … well, you get the idea.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Brandon School Division welcomed its new superintendent of schools to the city during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Marc Casavant will be moving to the Wheat City from Weyburn, Sask., to take on the role currently held by superintendent and CEO Donna Michaels, who is retiring after 15 years in the position.
The Manitoba legislature resumed for a brief pre-election sitting Wednesday with the troubled NDP government facing accusations that it is hiding bad financial news. Opposition Leader Brian Pallister demanded the government table a full budget, instead of a planned shorter fiscal update, prior to the April 19 election. He accused Premier Greg Selinger of trying to hide details such as the extent of the deficit before voters go to the polls.
