SIXTY YEARS AGO
More than 400 people gathered in the auditorium of the Brandon Collegiate Institute to hear the first public concert of the Brandon Public Schools Orchestra-Band Association.
Premier Duff Roblin announced a five-stage, $100-million forest development plan to be constructed at The Pas and financed under terms of an agreement signed in Switzerland last week. Construction is to begin immediately. Plans for the project nclude a sawmill, a newsprint and magazine paper mill, a chemical finishing plant to supply chemical pulp required in manufacturing newsprint and a sulphite pulp mill.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Acting on advice from city solicitor Frank Meighen, council decided to allow Mike Pochynok, Clayton Swanson, Fred Miller and Darryl Darling to proceed with construction of a new dining facility on 18th Street North. The decision ends months of discussion regarding the development which, though fronting on 18th Street, will have access from 17th Street and Maple Avenue.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The number of sexual abuse cases reported in western Manitoba last year jumped 34 per cent over 1984, but ballooned a staggering 210 per cent over 1983.
About 12,000 cable-television subscribers in Brandon can expect better reception for Channels 10 and 11 in about six weeks as Westman Media Co-operative Ltd. has received permission to receive CBS and NBC channels from Detroit by satellite.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
For more than three decades, local youths have benefited from Neepawa’s Evelyn McKee’s commitment to the 4-H program. Last night, she was honoured as this year’s recipient of the Don Wood Memorial Award, given each year by the Assiniboine Kiwanis Club to a person who has made a substantial contribution to the community.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The one-day snowfall record for the month of March in Dauphin, set on March 25, 1942, has been broken. Last Wednesday, the city was blanketed by 27 centimetres of snow, besting the 64-year-old record of 25.4 centimetres.
Longtime Oakburn resident Wladek Chwaluk died last year, but he won’t soon be forgotten. Chwaluk left more than $112,000 to the Hamiota District Health Centre in his will, and his family recently presented the hospital with the cheque. Chwaluk spent the last year of his life in and out of the Hamiota hospital. He died there on May 22, 2005.
TEN YEARS AGO
Brandon School Division trustees approved a slightly slimmer 2016-17 budget on Monday evening, which reins in a proposed property tax increase from 5.4 to 4.4 per cent. At an all-day meeting on Feb. 16, trustees prepared a preliminary budget that included $1.67 million in new spending on top of a budget that grew by 4.4 per cent over last year.
Kerselin Fumier hopes the local Mauritian community will feel a bit closer to their island home now that March 12 — this Saturday — is officially dedicated Mauritius Independence Day in Brandon. Mayor Rick Chrest was joined by members of the Mauritius Cultural Association of Brandon on Tuesday for the proclamation signing at city hall.
